RECOMMENDATIONS

Below is a list of books I have read or listened to - I DON'T recommend anything I have not reviewed. The short descriptions are why they are valuable to you.  The hyperlinks will take you to the Amazon.com page, I may receive an affiliate commission on any purchases you make.

  • Educated This is a memoir of a young girl's life growing up in a remote Idaho town. Her imagery, painted with stunning visuals, shows the violence, domestic abuse and love, present in her isolationist family. She leaves the tight family unit to become a scholar and amazing writer. I HIGHLY recommend this for insights into personal growth, what Domestic Abuse looks like from the victim's side and sheer genius of language.
  • Never Split The Difference - Family law is alot like a hostage situation and this former FBI Hostage Negotiator has much to teach on ways to deal with your opponent.

  • Negotiation by Brian Tracy - He is one of the foremost experts on negotiation and this book (also an audiobook you can get from your local library and/or Audible.com) is a master course on how to approach tough negotiation situations.

  • A Family’s Heartbreak - Mike Jeffries went through a divorce and child custody battle that was based in Severe Parental Alienation. This book chronicles his journey while alternating paragraphs of his conversations with his therapist. Very illuminating book on all the dynamics involved.

  • Stop Walking On Eggshells - Probably the best book out there on dealing with the Borderline Personality Disordered person. HIGHLY recommend this as a way to get YOUR sanity back, which probably has taken a beating. 

  • Divorce Poison - A classic book on dealing with divorce and parental alienation and how it impacts the children. 

  • Power of Habit - When you need to rebuild your life, this book will help greatly on how to achieve more change faster.

  • Fatherhood - Written by NBA star Etan Thomas this exploration of what it means to be a father, and how to improve is a great uplifting read. (Side note: I once flew across the country on a redeye to have a 40 minute meeting with Etan for a fatherhood project. He's a very congenial guy!)

  • Being A Great Divorced Dad by NoloPress. This is a robust resource of tips and advice on how to be a more active, engaged and loving father.

  • Parent Savvy -  A wonderfully resource for First Time Parents that answers almost all your questions about parenting from a legal, financial  and practical perspective.

  • Raising Cain –  Protecting The emotional Life of Our Boys. A deep dive into what it means to raise boys and what their unique needs and responses are to growing up male.

  • The Boy Crisis – Dr. Warren Farrell and John Gray wrote a tremendous book for anyone who raising a boy in today's rapidly changing school, work and social environment.

  • Boys Adrift - In Boys Adrift, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than twenty years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home. He shows how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that is literally toxic to boys. He also presents practical solutions, sharing strategies which educators have found effective in re-engaging these boys at school, as well as handy tips for parents about everything from homework, to videogames, to medication.

  • Adult Children of Parental Alienation – Amy Baker's exploration of the long term damage that Parental Alienation does to children is a foundational resource for anyone who is fighting for custody against an alienator. This book is a roadmap on how to help your child.

  • Daring Greatly – Dr. Brene Brown knocks it out of the park - again. One of the biggest problems facing men after a breakup or divorce is how to rebuild their lives and find the inner resources to continue. This book will be a huge help. If you're not familiar with her work, start with her TED talks, the first on one Shame and the second on Vulnerability have been viewed by millions and are life changing.
